Next Generation Access
The new superfast broadband programme for South Yorkshire, called Digital Region, will provide ubiquitous access to 25Mbs across the region. Installation work is well underway and Internet Service Providers are already signed up.
Digital Region means that South Yorkshire is ideally placed to be a test bed for new high-tech industries and e-enabled public services. Early exemplars include an assisted living project at Barnsley and Rotherham, developed through the Advanced Digital Institute.
The region is also part of a new secure data network for Creative and Digital Industries called NorthernNet, providing a minimum of 100Mbs fibre connectivity for the delivery of large and sensitive data files.
For some time, NYnet has opened up broadband opportunities for rural and coastal locations in North Yorkshire, and is now offering a secure VPN for mobile employees.
Imaginative and ambitious bids to the regional ERDF fund will be an important catalyst for exploiting the opportunities provided by these infrastructure developments. Digital 20/20 has been working with partners to help shape ideas and build collaboration through the Public Sector e-Strategy Group.
