Collaboration with the Train To Gain Enhancement Fund Commissioning Framework on ICT & digital specifications
Digital 20/20 Theme:
Current Workforce: Higher Level Skills and Business ICT Adoption
Digital 20/20 and its predecessor programmes have been working for a number of years to build the case for public intervention in the education and training market to ensure businesses and individuals in the region are equipped to meet the challenges of the digital future. Recently, the Train to Gain Enhancement Fund, a regional initiative supported by Yorkshire Forward and the European Social Fund, announced it would sponsor a range of initiatives promoted by Digital 20/20.
Digital 20/20 has drawn up a commissioning framework which will allow partners to meet changing needs in an increasingly digitally focused economy.
The outline of the proposed Commissioning Framework involves three strands:
1. The Wow Factor!
2. Vendor Skills
3. Living, Working & Learning in the Digital Economy
1. The Wow Factor!
This strand will further consolidate the region’s position as a leading contender in embracing the digital economy. It is designed to make direct links with the latest developments in the technology field and to ensure that the region’s businesses and their employees are equipped with the skills to take advantage of new technologies.
The core of this activity will be the design, development and delivery of approximately ten one/two day courses which will act as introductions to key new technologies and how their use can improve business competitiveness.
Nine courses have already been commissioned and are now available on a Creative Commons license - you can read more about them here.
2. Vendor Skills
This strand will seek significantly to increase the capacity of the region’s education and training providers to deliver the ICT and Digital Media qualifications identified as being in most demand from the region’s businesses. This is especially important as curriculum from providers such Microsoft, Cisco, Apple and Adobe has seen major change in structure and content recently.
3. Living, Working & Learning in the Digital Economy
This strand will seek to implement aspects of the recommendations in the Digital 2010 / SQA “Next Generation User Skills” report. Specifically, it will offer provision which focuses on:
- Skills that all employers will need, which they may not currently recognise – including web presence, information productivity, market research, infrastructure management
- Skills that people (especially young people) will already have, but which may not be recognised or accredited
- Generic occupational skills that people will need – such as remote working, online communication, information research, lifelong learning and, not least, management of their digital environment
- Essential skills for living and learning in a digital age – including communication, accessing public services and underpinning personal e-confidence
It will develop, pilot and deliver provision designed around these parameters to help Yorkshire and Humber’s companies to survive the economic downturn through the adoption of new working practices and use of technology. At the same time, it will help employees in the region to acquire skills to make them more adept and flexible in the labour market and be better equipped to deal with changes in the economy.
